Mission of the Central Maryland Henry Ossian Flipper Memorial Scholarship fund: To ensure future generations are made aware of the history and sacrifice of past generations and to provide scholarship aid to needy students.  We do all of this in order to continue to promote the legacy of our ancestors, as well as to promote generational change in our community.  We believe that education is an investment in future generations which will enhance the quality of life for all.

Our Chapter’s Vision   It is our hope that knowing more about the Buffalo Soldiers will encourage greater appreciation for their contributions to American society. We hope that programs like this will promote multicultural dialog and encourage young people to emulate their legacy of honor, valor and courage in every day life.

Applicants CANNOT be a family member of a Buffalo Soldier Full Member or Associate Member of any Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club Chapter.

Applicants must be a Maryland resident and reside in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City County, Baltimore County or Howard County to apply.

The Buffalo Soldiers Central Maryland provides high school seniors an opportunity to compete for a “two thousand dollar ($2,000.00) scholarship” for a graduating Senior who has met or exceeded Scholarship requirements. If selected, the Scholarship may be used at any “accredited” Higher Educational or Certification Institution that you attend (funds will be distributed to institution via registrar/bursar).

 Selection Criterion:

Students will be awarded the scholarship based on the following criterion:

  1. Graduating Senior Application
  2. *Academic achievement: minimum 3.0 GPA (official school transcript required)
  3. *Typed essay (500 word minimum)
  4. *Acceptance to an “accredited” degree or certification granting institution
  5. *Two letters of recommendation
  6. *A letter of introduction (identifying yourself and your contribution to school and community, your family background, and your educational need)
  7. Letter from a parent or guardian explaining your financial need, with a phone number.
  8. *Provide a brief summary of how you plan to use the scholarship funding if selected
  9. ACT/SAT Scores
  10. Timely submission of required documentation  (Post Marked on or before, 15 April 2018)
  11.  U.S. Citizen
  12.  Interview with Scholarship Committee (as necessary)   
  13. Scholarship Recipient Media release/permission/wavier form must be signed by applicant and a consenting parent


Essay Criterion

All submissions must encompass a 500 word essay (typewritten) utilizing the following format guidelines: Ø  American Psychological Association (APA) format. Neither footnotes, nor a bibliography can be a substitute for in-text citations. Ø  Sources must come from a combination of the following mediums: magazines, books, personal sources, the Internet. Ø  Use Times New Roman, 12-point font Ø  Double space

Do Not write about the Buffalo Soldiers or Troopers Motorcycle Club, but about the historical Buffalo Soldiers formed in 1866.

Essay Topics:

  1. In What Ways Does the Buffalo Soldier Legacy Inspire Me?
  2. The stories of the Buffalo Soldiers exemplify many positive character traits.  Please provide examples from the lives of Buffalo Soldiers (living or deceased) and write on two of those traits and how they can be used to help mold or develop your life.
  3. Why is it necessary that we pass on the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers to future generations?
  4. The Congressional Medal of Honor is presented to the recipient by the President of the United States in the name of Congress.  This is the highest award for valor presented to military members   recognized for having performed the highest degrees of bravery and self-sacrifice on the battlefield.  Please write on one of the Buffalo Soldiers that was awarded the Medal of Honor and what can be learned from his life, and or efforts, and commitment to duty.
  5. What are your dreams, hopes, and aspirations or what are your intentions upon graduation from college and how do they reflect or mirror the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of the Buffalo Soldiers?

Additional Required Documentation

Submit a letter of introduction identifying yourself, your accomplishments to date, your family background, and the degree or certification you are seeking, and your financial need.  Provide a brief summary on how you plan to use the scholarship funding, if selected.

Have your parent or guardian write a letter explaining your financial need and why your financial situation warrants that you need financial assistance for college. They should provide a phone number that will be used by the selection committee to follow-up on your financial need.

 Letters of Recommendation

Two (2) Letters of Recommendation may be from the following list.  (Example: 1 teacher, 1 minister)

  •  Teacher
  •  Guidance Counselor
  •  Minister
  •  Employer
  •  Community Leader/Mentor

                                   Completed scholarship packets must be post marked on or before:   15 April 2018

Award Confirmation

The Scholarship committee will select one recipient.  The recipient will be notified via a memo and via email. A representative of the Chapter will recognize the Buffalo Soldier Central Maryland Chapter Scholarship recipient at a school sponsored function – to be determined jointly by school’s recommending counselor and the scholarship committee.  The recipient may also be recognized at a Buffalo Soldier scheduled event. Scholarship award will be mailed, via memo, directly to the institution on behalf of the recipient at the start of the August semester. Contact the Central Maryland Chapter for additional information and application forms.  Counselors will be used as the school’s point of contact for validating the entry and arranging the opportunity to recognize the student. A Complete Application Packet Must Contain the following for full consideration:

  1.  Application
  2.  Letter of Introduction
  3. A 500 word essay on one of the topics described above.
  4. Official High School transcript
  5. SAT/ACT Scores
  6. Two letters of recommendation on official letterhead
  7. Planned use of scholarship funding
  8. Proof of Tuition Expenditure (tuition bill, acceptance letter, enrollment letter, etc.)
  9. Letter from a parent or guardian explaining your financial need, with a phone number.

Mailing Packet Submission – 

  • Packets and applications should be mailed to P.O. Box 32822 Pikesville, MD 21282-9998.
  • Packets for academic year 2017-2018 must be post marked on or before April 15, 2018.
  • Recipients will be notified NLT May 1, 20178 via memo and email, respectively.

NOTE:  BSMCCMD scholarship recipients will be eligible to compete for the NABSTMC Frontier / National Scholarship, BSMCCMD chapter scholarship committee members will provide CMD recipients the Frontier/National application for the recipient’s submission to NABSTMC Frontier/National Scholarship Committee’s selection.  

NOTE:  Once an applicant’s data has been received, all application packages and media become the property of the BSMC and will remain on file with BSMCCMD Scholarship Chairperson.

Privacy Statement:   BSMCCMD does not collect information from site visitors and all applicants data will be “safeguarded” by the Committee Chairperson. No applicant will be enrolled to receive extraneous emails and/or solicitations from the BSMC.   Applicants must sign a waiver of consent (w/parent’s signature as well) which will allow BSMC to “contact & recognize applicants via various forms of media and social media”, at no time will any Personal Identifiable Information (PII) be disclosed outside of scholarship committee.
Applicants must provide acknowledgement that they are willing to receive emails regarding scholarship award requirements by signing media waiver as part of their application package.
 All applicants must notify BSMC Scholarship Committee Chairperson(s) in written form  (emailing the Committee Chairperson is acceptable) should they want to OPT OUT of receiving any BSMC emails or contact.
